Staples Center
The Staples Center in Los Angeles, California is home to the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association. The Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League also call Staples Center home. As part of the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment District, more then sports can be seen at Staples Center each year.
When Staples Center was completed in 1999, cost of construction stood at $330 million. Financing of the stadium was paid for largely in part by the home teams. Staples, Inc. paid $100 million for 20-year naming rights. For basketball games, Staples Center has a capacity of 20,000 people; for hockey games, the stadium seats 19,000 people. Staples Center can be converted from hosting a hockey game to hosting a basketball game in less than two hours. There is disabled seating on all levels of the stadium.
The first basketball game at Staples Center was on November 2, 1999, when the Los Angeles Clippers hosted the Seattle SuperSonics. Staples Center hosts over 230 events yearly and attracts up to 3 million visitors. Concerts such as Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, U2, and Billy Joel have been played at Staples Center. The PAC-10 Men's Basketball Tournament is set to be hosted at the Staples Center.
Other events that have taken place at Staples Center include the 2000 Democratic National Convention, and the Grammy Awards have been hosted annually at the Staples Center since 2000. The WTA Tour Championships were also held at Staples Center, from 2002 to 2005. The largest crowd ever at Staples Center was on April 3, 2005, when 20,193 people watched WWE WrestleMania 21.
Getting there and getting around
The Staples Center is located at 1111 S. Figueroa St. in downtown Los Angeles. Staples Center sits at the intersection of the 10 and 110 Freeways, and is adjacent to the Los Angeles Convention Center. There is plenty of parking located around Staples Center in terms of 13 different lots. Lots 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, and 11 are all wheelchair accessible.
