United Center Stadium

Although the United Center is one of the largest arenas in the United States, it does not have the highest seating capacity. United Center fills a 23,500 seating capacity for concerts with 21,700 seats for basketball and about 1,200 less available for hockey. The football-bowl shape of the arena does provide good sight lines even in the farthest seats. The Chicago Bulls of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Hockey League's (NHL) Chicago Blackhawks gained a larger, more comfortable stadium with 216 luxury suites in 1994, but they gave up a part of Chicago's history. Their former home, Chicago Stadium, had a close-seated crowd, standing-room-only areas, history dating back to 1929, and one of the biggest hometown noise advantages in the league. The Chicago Bulls seem to have taken the change of venue in stride having won three championships in each stadium.

United Center hosts more than 200 events annually. The1996 Democratic National Convention returned to Chicago's United Center after an absence from the city of nearly thirty years. The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, U2, and The Three Tenors have all performed at United Center. Prominent sporting events hosted at United Center include the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament, the Men's National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Basketball Tournament and the Great Eight Classic. But whether United Center is hosting Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, a Chicago Bulls game, or Champions on Ice the arena suits the purpose well.

William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks partnered with Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls to acquire the $175 million United Center. Naming rights were sold to United Airlines at $1.8 million annually for 20 years.

Getting There and Getting Around

United Center is located west of Chicago's Loop at 1901 W. Madison St. It is accessible by CTA buses. Pay parking lots are available close to United Center. Drivers are best to stick to the pay parking lots. Carmichael's Chicago Steak House and Hawkeye's Bar & Grill provide a free shuttle to United Center for most games and concerts. Please check in advance for availability. Built with 100 percent ADA compliance, wheelchair access is provided at restrooms, payphones, drinking fountains, concession/merchandise stands, and ticket counters. Wheelchair seating, located on each level, can be accessed by the elevators in the suite entrances on the north and south sides of United Center. Make arrangements prior to arrival. Sign language interpreters and assisted listening devices are available with 72-hour advance notice.
