Charlotte Bobcats Arena Gives the New Cats a Home

When Charlotte Bobcats Arena opened in October 2005 the Rolling Stones opening song "Start Me Up" couldn't have been more apropos. The grand opening in Charlotte, North Carolina, signaled not just a new arena but a new era for North Carolina basketball. The Charlotte Bobcats, founded as a National Basketball Association franchise in 2004, closed the door on the Hornets' history in Charlotte. The Hornets have since moved to New Orleans. The Charlotte Bobcats played at Charlotte Coliseum in their inaugural season but have since moved to their custom-designed home Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

Known locally as The Uptown Arena or CBA, the facility also houses the Charlotte Sting of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the Charlotte Checkers, a minor league ice hockey team in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Charlotte Bobcats Arena cost an estimated $200 million for construction plus $65 million for land and infrastructure changes. It seats 18,500 for NBA basketball including 62 suites, 58 loge boxes, and 2,600 club, and courtside seats. Seating at Charlotte Bobcats Arena can also be downsized to create a theater setting serving 4,000 to 7,000 guests.

Charlotte Bobcats Arena's Sprite Rufus Room, located on the Uptown Concourse behind Rock the Rooftop, is an area designed to entertain kids of all ages while providing an interactive basketball experience. Charlotte is an area steeped in basketball history, which makes Charlotte Bobcats Arena an appropriate home to the Greater Charlotte Sports Hall of Fame. Another Charlotte Bobcats Arena feature that enhances the viewing experience for any event is a center-hung Daktronics video screen and scoreboard that measures 16 feet by 28 feet, currently the largest of any indoor arena. As an entertainment venue, Charlotte Bobcats Arena features performers including Bon Jovi, Dolly Parton, U2, Larry the Cable Guy, Clay Aiken, Elton John, WWE Raw, Keith Urban, Stars on Ice, and circus shows. And future dates and events are quickly being scheduled.

Charlotte Bobcats Arena has been chosen as a site for the 2008 men's regional NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Tournament. The 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) men's basketball tournament is scheduled for Charlotte Bobcats Arena as well. And the Charlotte 49ers college basketball team has tentatively agreed to play several high-profile games at Charlotte Bobcats Arena during the next several seasons.

Getting There and Getting Around

Charlotte Bobcats Arena is located at 333 E. Trade St. More than 30,000 parking spaces are available near Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Charlotte's main bus terminal is conveniently located next to Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Also, both the Charlotte and Gold Rush street trolleys stop at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. The facility recommends that guests with disabilities access the arena from the Fifth Street side near the disabled drop-off location. Seating at Charlotte Bobcats Arena for wheelchair users can include one wheelchair space and three companion seats per event and should be arranged in advance. Guests who are hard of hearing, blind, or partially sighted can obtain assisted listening devices at no charge.
