The Los Angeles Lakers joined the National Basketball Association as the Detroit Gems in 1946. Then they were the Minneapolis Lakers from 1947 until 1960; the team has been the Los Angeles Lakers ever since. The Los Angeles Lakers, in their colors of purple and gold, play their home games at Staples Center as part of the Western Conference Pacific Division. To date, the Los Angeles Lakers have won 14 NBA championships, 28 conference titles, and 26 division titles. Notable former players include Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and George Mikan.

The Western Conference Pacific Division of the NBA features four teams from California and a team from Arizona. The Golden State Warriors play their home games in The Oracle, while the Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Lakers share home court at Staples Center, and the Sacramento Kings play in ARCO Arena.
