The first race at the Pocono Raceway was on the three-quarter mile track in 1968; three years later, the first Indy race took place on the 2 .5-mile track; and the first NASCAR race at the Pocono Raceway took place in 1974. Pocono Raceway has a unique design that some consider a tri-oval. However, the turns are much worse than those at other similarly-shaped tracks such as the Daytona International Speedway. None of the turns are the same, and none of the straightaways are the same length.

Beginning in 1990, the Pocono Raceway underwent an approximate $3 million-per-year restoration. Everything from new crash walls to new paving to a new Garage area was completed. A 150-site motor home park for race participants makes the Pocono Raceway only the second such facility to offer such services.

A number of racing records have been set at Pocono Raceway. In 2004, Kasey Kahne set a record of 172.533 mph . for one lap during the Pocono 500 Qualifying Race . Rusty Wallace set a record of 144.892 mph in 1996 during the Pennsylvania 500.

The Pocono Raceway hosts two races each NASCAR Nextel Cup season -- the Pocono 500 and the Pennsylvania 500. Located within 90 miles of the No . 1 television market , New York , and the No. 4 market , Philadelphia , the Pocono Raceway is within 200 miles of over 60 million people.
