Phoenix International Raceway

The Phoenix International Raceway is located in Avondale, Arizona, about 20 miles west of Phoenix. Phoenix International Raceway opened in January 1964. It wasn't until the Winston Cup came to the Phoenix International Raceway as part of the NASCAR Nextel Series in 1988 that Phoenix became a major attraction in NASCAR racing.

The annual Fall NASCAR weekend, including NASCAR Nextel Cup, Busch and Craftsman Trucks, and Featherlite Southwest Series races are some of the biggest events in the state of Arizona. The Checker Auto Parts 500 is arguably the largest one-day sporting event in all of Arizona. Seating capacity of Phoenix International Raceway is 76,800 people. The track at Phoenix International Raceway is a 1-mile oval with a bended backstretch that limits passing. Turns 1 and 2 are 11 degree banking turns, while turns 3 and 4 are 9 degree banking turns.

Lights were installed at Phoenix International Raceway in winter 2004 to allow for nighttime racing for the first time. Events scheduled to take place at Phoenix International Raceway in 2006 include the Subway Fresh 500 and the Phoenix 250, among other races. The Phoenix International Raceway is close enough to Phoenix that NASCAR fans can enjoy more than just racing when they visit. Phoenix, the sixth-largest city in the United States, flourishes off of tourism and is known for its golf, tennis, shopping, and sun.
