North Carolina Speedway

The North Carolina Speedway is located in Rockingham, North Carolina, 75 miles east of Charlotte and 95 miles southwest of Raleigh. The track was nicknamed "The Rock" and seats over 65,000 fans around its 1.017-mile oval. The Rock opened on October 31, 1965, as a joint venture between Darlington Raceway builder Harold Brasington and landowner Bill Land. Over time, the track came under control of L.G. DeWitt, a local trucking company executive who supervised reshaping the original flat mile track into the present, banked 1.017-mile oval in 1969. North Carolina Speedway has played an important role in the history of NASCAR and its top divisions. For 39 years fans have witnessed some of the most competitive NASCAR racing on the circuit, celebrated with first-time winners and crowned champions. The NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch series both race at Rockingham; the track held two races through the 2003 season, but lost a race to California Speedway. Both the Nextel and Busch races are held on the same weekend in February, one week after the Daytona 500. Recently, it has been said that the North Carolina Speedway will be sold to Speedway Motorsports, Inc, after previous ownership suffered a few problems.
