Las Vegas Motor Speedway
The Las Vegas Motor Speedway, nicknamed the "Diamond in the Desert," is located a few miles northeast of Las Vegas, just off I-15. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway is tri-oval track with 12 degree banking on two turns, and a 1250 foot straight with 9 degree banking on the start/finish line. The oval Superspeedway length is 1.5 miles. A 2.5-mile road course, a .5 mile dirt oval, a drag strip, and Go-Kart tracks are also part of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Dubbed 'the Racing Capital of the West' by Sports Illustrated, Las Vegas Motor Speedway pans 1,600 acres in the northeast portion of the Las Vegas Valley. Some consider Las Vegas Motor Speedway the most remarkable race complex in the world. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway opened in 1996, with the Las Vegas 500 Indy Racing League event as the first race held there. LVMS hosted its first NASCAR event in 1996: the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season finale.
In 2006, construction of the Richard Petty Terrace in Turn 1 was completed, allowing fans a shot at 14,000 additional tickets and pushing the track's seating capacity to nearly 150,000. Original construction on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway began in 1995. It required crews to move a total of four million cubic yards of dirt, equaling 35, 000 yards per day. A custom-designed lighting system features 2,600 lighting fixtures on 200 light poles. In addition, LVMS is made up of 8,000 mirrors, 175 miles of wire, 600 tons of steel, and 1,975 tons of concrete. Just on the racing surface, a total of 42,000 tons of asphalt was added to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the equivalent of 17 miles of residential roadways. Las Vegas Motor Speedway also features air-conditioned infield garages of the super speedway, which have room for 106 teams.
The total cost of the state-of-the-art facility came to $200 million. The 1,600-acre complex has complete accommodations for virtually every form of motorsports activity, as well as for other types of events. With several races happening on the Speedway, it has been said that if it has wheels it can be raced at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. And with the many racing schools like the Richard Petty Driving Experience, Derek Daly Performance Driving Academy, 600 Racing, the Mario Andretti Racing School, and Freddie Spencer's Riding School, fans can do more than just watch racing.
There are also short track programs held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway making use of The Bullring (a 3/8-mile paved oval), along with road courses, a dirt track, and a state-of-the-art dragway. On any given weekend, activity fills virtually every portion of the facility. On March 2, 3, and 4, 2001, Nevada set another attendance record when more than 275,000 fans attended Pennzoil World of Outlaws, NAPA 300 NASCAR Winston West, Sam's Town 300, and UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 NASCAR Winston Cup race events. In 2003 and 2004, more than 140,000 fans attended the UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400.
Las Vegas is a fun city, and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the perfect facility to match the excitement of Sin City. The combination could not be any better, and the hospitality in this 24-hour city is virtually unchallenged anywhere else in the nation. The city of Sin is happy to add LVMS to its list of attractions.
