Dover International Speedway

Dover International Speedway , near Dover , Delaware , is unique in several aspects. Known as the "Monster Mile," the Dover International Speedway is exactly one mile long and is not technically a superspeedway or a short track. The Dover International Speedway features a track that is concrete. Most NASCAR tracks are asphalt. In addition, located in close proximity to the Dover International Speedway is the Dover Downs horse racing track. Both the race tracks are part of an extensive entertainment complex.

Dover International Speedway hosts two NASCAR Nextel Cup races a year : the MBNA 400 and the Dover 400. Special to the Dover International Speedway is the DuPont Monster Bridge . The bridge claims to be the "Most Exciting Seat in Sports" and extends over the width of the track. Inside the bridge are 56 custom-built theater-style seats, nine flat-screen televisions, a full-service bar, and a metal "catch fence."

Dover International Speedway opened in 1969 and the first event on the speedway was a July 6th NASCAR Winston Cup Series race won by Richard Petty. Two years later, all races other than the NASCAR Winston Cup Series races were dropped from the schedule in order to allow focus on NASCAR . Throughout the years, more and more seating was added to the Dover International Speedway until the addition in 2000 set the speedway capacity at 133,000 people, which is the largest capacity of a mid-Atlantic region sport facility. An addition of 10,000 seats in 2001 still leaves the Dover International Speedway as the largest in the region.
