NASCAR Season is upon us as the fabled Daytona 500 draws near. Considered by fans and drivers alike to be one of the biggest races of the year, the Daytona 500 can not be missed.
The first Daytona 500 took place on February 22, 1965 and was filled with enough drama to make the event historical after only one race. Lee Petty was named the winner of the inaugural race after three days of photo and film review reversed the initial decision. This first unusual win, would be a precursor to the storied history of the Daytona 500.
The 1970's saw some changes in the format of the historic race as the energy crisis of the time caused officials to lower the 1974 race to only 180 laps. To keep with the tradition of the Daytona 500 though, the race started on the 21st lap to keep the history of the name in tact, if only symbolically. Richard Petty won this historic iteration of the Daytona 500 and his second in a row. In 1979, the Daytona 500 became the first 500 lap to race to be televised live on national television. A crash in the final lap of the race brought much attention to NASCAR nationally. A fight erupted in the grass of Daytona after the crash and overshadowed the finish of the race that had Richard Petty take home the checkered flag.
Over the course of the next ten years, the Daytona 500 gained attention through the incredibly driving of the racers, and not through crashes and fights. It was during this period that the legacy of the Daytona 500 began to be formed. Now, in it latest incarnation, the Daytona 500 is a bigger event than ever and is home to the greatest drivers in the world all competing for the coveted win. Even though the Daytona 500 doesn't differ from any of the other championship races as far as points go, it is highly regarded as the most prestigious win in NASCAR.
The 2007 Daytona 500 ended in incredible fashion, and Daytona 500 tickets holders were more than pleased, when first time Daytona winner Kevin Harvick took home the checkered flag to narrowly beat Mark Martin. The finish was only one of the day's incredible events though, after a series of wrecks eliminated many favorites, and Clint Bowyer crossed the finish line with his car upside down. Never one to disappoint, this Daytona 500 truly lived up to the hype. And then some! Make sure you're there to experience this incredible racing specatcle with Daytona 500 tickets.
