The New York Yankees of Pro Baseball play their home games in Yankee Stadium. Located in the Bronx,New York, Yankee Stadium first opened on April 18, 1923, when the New York Yankees hosted the Boston Red Sox. It was the first ballpark to be named "Stadium" instead of "Field," "Grounds," or "Park." The field was originally enclosed by a misshapen quarter-mile warning running track along the outfield wall, which served as a warning track which eventually set a standard in all major league ballparks.

Many memorable moments in baseball history have happened in front of the crowds at Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run in 1927, and Roger Maris hit his 61st home run in 1961. Both were single-season records at the time and both were at Yankee Stadium. Don Larson pitched a perfect World Series game in 1956. Reggie Jackson hit three home runs in a World Series game in 1977.

The 1939, 1960 (as one of two host sites for two All-Star games that year), and 1977 Pro Baseball All-Star Games were hosted at Yankee Stadium. While Yankee Stadium is most commonly known as the home of the New York Yankees, there have been other events held there as well. The New York Giants of the National Football League (NFL) briefly played their home games at Yankee Stadium, from 1956 until 1973. Various college football events have been held at Yankee Stadium throughout the years. Many boxing matches have been held at Yankee Stadium including the first-round knockout of Max Schemling by Joe Louis on June 22, 1938. Pope Paul VI celebrated Mass at Yankee Stadium in front of a crowd of over 80,000 people on October 4, 1965, as the first papal mass delivered in North America. Pope John Paul II celebrated mass at Yankee Stadium 14 years later. The memorial service for the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks was held there on September 23, 2001.

Yankee Stadium has undergone renovations twice in its history. The first time was a $2.5 million renovation in 1923. Also, Yankee Stadium was closed for three years until 1976 during a $48 million renovation. Construction of a new stadium in Macombs Dan Park is anticipated to begin in 2006, with a completion in time for the 2009 season. The new ballpark is planned to hold 51,000 people.
