Metrodome

Even though its name is commonly only shortened to one, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome is home to two professional sports teams. The Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL) and the Minnesota Twins of Pro Baseball share home field time in the Metrodome. The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers men's football team and baseball team play their home games at the Metrodome as well. The Minnesota Twins first began playing in the Metrodome on April 6, 1982, when they hosted the Seattle Mariners.

Named for the former mayor and Minneapolis and former United States Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, funding for the Metrodome was thanks to the state of Minnesota. The budget for the stadium stood at $68 million and it was to be noted that only construction stay within the allocated budget, but that the building was completed on time. Both are rarities in the days of completing such structures. The stadium has a seating capacity of 45,423 people; however, since it was originally built with football in mind, it is often thought that as many as 1,400 of those seats have obstructed sight lines.

The Metrodome features a roof of double-layered Teflon fabric, which is supported by air pressure. Guests enter the seating concourse area through revolving doors. Any ball that hits the roof is considered in play. There has been at least three occasions when snow has caused the roof of the structure to rip.

The Metrodome has seen many interesting and historical occurrences since it first opened. On May 4, 1984, Oakland A's batter Dave Kingman hit a ball through the roof. Rather than being credited for hitting a home run, the hit was declared a double. The 1985 Pro Baseball All-Star Game was hosted at the Metrodome. The Metrodome has hosted the World Series in 1987 and 1991; the Pro Baseball All-Star Game in 1985; the Super Bowl in 1992; and the NCAA Final Four in 1992 and 2001.

The Metrodome is one of the last "multipurpose facilities" that hosts more than one sport. Plans are currently in the works for a new stadium in Minneapolis in an effort to keep the Twins in Minnesota.
