Fenway Park

Fenway Park in Boston, home of the Boston Red Sox of Pro Baseball, is one of the oldest standing active ballparks in the United States. Fenway Park cost $650,000 to construct. Located near its namesake Fenway neighborhood in the heart of Boston, Fenway Park opened on April 20, 1912, after the first two games that were scheduled to be played were rained out. That was the same day the now-abandoned Tiger Stadium in Detroit was opened.

As changes and renovations are made to Fenway Park, the seating capacity fluctuates. When it first opened, seating capacity stood at 35,000 people. Most of the seating capacity hovered around the mid-30,000s. However, when renovations are completed in 2006, seating capacity is set to be at an all-time high of 38,805. Included in the seating capacity are four different suite and hospitality options, ranging from the Monster Corner atop the Green Monster Wall, to the Upper Suites in the roof boxes above the first and third baselines.

Fenway Park is unique in a few aspects. One of the more famous characteristics is the left field wall, most commonly referred to as the "Green Monster." While measuring only 310 feet from home plate, the wall is a monstrous 37 feet tall and 240 feet long. In the right field bleachers is the Lone Red Seat, which is where the longest measurable home run was hit inside the confines of Fenway Park. On June 9, 1946, the Boston Red Sox's Ted Williams hit a home run that measured 502 feet. No ball has ever been hit over the right field roof. The foul ball territory of Fenway Park is the smallest of all major league stadiums.

For brief periods of time, other teams played in Fenway Park. The Washington Redskins of the National Football League played there from 1933 until 1936 when they were known as the Boston Redskins. The New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL) called Fenway Park home from 1963 until 1968. Both Boston College and Boston University have used Fenway Park for football games in the past. Fenway Park was not intended to be used for concerts but has drawn such performers as Jimmy Buffet, Bruce Springsteen, and The Rolling Stones. The 1946, 1961, and 1999 Pro Baseball All-Star Games and festivities were held at Fenway Park. Fenway Park hosted the first two games of the 2004 World Series when the Boston Red Sox went on to win the World Series at Busch Stadium for their first World Series win since 1918.

Getting there and getting around

Fenway Park is located at 4 Yawkey Way in the heart of Boston. The Massachusetts Bay Transity Authority offers various lines that stop within walking distance of Fenway Park when traveling either by subway or commuter rail. When traveling by car, it is important to keep in mind that traffic congestion begins as little as one hour prior to game time. I-95 and I-90, as well Routes 1 and 2, are all good options for those traveling from the southwest/west/northwest areas outside of Boston. Route 24 is recommended from the south, and north/northeast of Boston should take either I-95, or Routes 1A or 1. Parking around the ballpark is very limited. There are plenty of parking garages in Boston that are within walking distance. There is handicap parking available near Gates B and D at Fenway Park and at many of the parking garages. All gates at Fenway Park are handicap-accessible and Gates B and D have elevators for fans in need of such services.
