Oriole Park At Camden Yards

Oriole Park at Camden Yards became the official home of the Baltimore Orioles on April 6, 1992, in a game against the Cleveland Indians. Camden Yards is an 85-acre area and Oriole Park is only a short walk from the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, and two blocks away from the birthplace of George Herman "Babe" Ruth. The $110- million project of building Camden Yards first began June 28, 1989, and was completed 33 months later. Eli Jacobs owned the Baltimore Orioles when the ballpark was built and wanted to call it Oriole Park. But Maryland governor William Donald Schafer, a former mayor of Baltimore, wanted to call it Camden Yards. Both men agreed to call it Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Oriole Park is both traditional and unique in design. The state-of-the-art building blends with the urban context of the downtown Baltimore area while using the same ideas of baseball parks built in the early 20th century to give Oriole Park its image. Steel trusses, an arched brick facade, a sun roof above the upper deck, and the natural grass of the field are just some of the ways Oriole Park is similar to baseball parks of the past. The success of the construction of Oriole Park has been attributed to the construction of other major ballparks in baseball, including Jacobs Field in Cleveland and Comerica Park in Detroit. A double-decked bullpen in left-center field and 1980s style Baltimore Orioles logos on each aisle seat are unique characteristics of Oriole Park.

The Camden Yards complex includes the Baltimore and Ohio Warehouse, which is the longest building on the East Coast. Included in the Warehouse are the offices of the Baltimore Orioles' staff, a cafeteria, sports bar, and the exclusive Camden Club.

Oriole Park was the site of the 1993 Pro Baseball All-Star Game. Cal Ripken Jr. broke the record for most consecutive games played before a capacity crowd at Oriole Park on September 6, 1995. Exactly one year to the date later, Eddie Murray hit his 500th career home run at Oriole Park. The only no-hitter at Oriole Park was thrown by Hideo Nomo of the Boston Red Sox on April 4, 2001.
