When the Montreal Expos announced in 2004 they were moving to Washington, D.C., it was decided they would play in RFK Stadium. The stadium now also hosts the home games of the Major League Soccer's (MLS) D.C. United. The formal name is Robert F. Kennedy Stadium after 1969 presidential candidate Robert Kennedy. When it was built in 1959, it was originally used by the Washington Senators of Pro Baseball from 1962 until 1971. The team later moved to Texas and became the Texas Rangers, now also a Pro Baseball franchise. Same for the National Football League's (NFL) Washington Redskins, who played in RFK Stadium from 1961 until 1996. The Washington Redskins then moved to FedEx Field.

When RFK Stadium was built, it cost $20 million. Prior to being renamed RFK Stadium, it was also known as D.C. Stadium. There are seven entrances to the stadium. Capacity at RFK Stadium is 45,596 for baseball and 55,672 for football and soccer. Seating in the ballpark is on five levels, and 60 percent of the seating is under cover. Included in the seating are five private boxes on the 300 level and nine private boxes on the mezzanine level. The only upper deck area of seating at RFK Stadium is across the outfield. A complex conversion system allows for the seating to be switched from a baseball game to a soccer game where the third-base lower-level seats need to be rolled into the outfield and the pitcher's mound is dropped three feet, and sod goes over the infield dirt.

With the revival of the usage of the stadium for baseball, RFK Stadium is now the fourth-oldest in all of Pro Baseball. It is one day older than Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. The first Washington Nationals game at RFK Stadium was on April 14, 2005, against the Arizona Diamondbacks while the first Washington Senators game was April 9, 1962. RFK Stadium hosted the 1962 and the 1969 Pro Baseball All-Star Games. The versatility of the ballpark allows for more than just soccer and baseball games in that concerts can be hosted as well. Other non-baseball events at RFK Stadium have included performances by Michael Jackson, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones.
