Shea Stadium in Flushing, New York, is home to the New York Mets of Pro Baseball. While the ballpark was originally going to be called Flushing Meadow Park, it was decided to name it after William A. Shea, who played a big part in bringing a Pro Baseball team back to New York following the departure of the Dodgers and Giants in 1957. The first baseball game took place on April 17, 1964, between the New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Prior to playing in Shea Stadium, the New York Mets spent their first two seasons at the Polo Grounds.

Construction of the ballpark was $25.5 million. The right-center field scoreboard is one of the largest scoreboards in Pro Baseball, measuring in at 175 feet long and 86 feet high. Shea Stadium was designed up be expandable up to a 90,000 person capacity when the middle deck and upper deck are extended around the outfield. Baseball seats 55,601 people, including wheelchair seating throughout the stadium. While the ballpark is known as one of the loudest in the Major Leagues, it is to be noted that most of the noise is due to the close proximity of Shea Stadium to LaGuardia Airport.

The only Pro Baseball All-Star Game that has been played at Shea Stadium was in 1964. The New York Yankees shared the playing field with the New York Mets from April 1974 until September 1975, while their home ballpark was undergoing a renovation. The New York Mets captured the 1969 World Series title at Shea Stadium, and they did it again in 1986. Dwight Gooden set a major league rookie record in 1984 with 276 strikeouts. Todd Hundley surpassed a 43-year-old record for most home runs by a catcher in a season when he broke Roy Campanella's record of 41.

Shea Stadium was the site of the first stadium concert in the world, which was a performance by the Beatles on August 15, 1965. Most recently, Bruce Springsteen put on a three-night concert series in October 2003. Pope John Paul II has also been to Shea Stadium.

As of June 2005, plans were announced for a new stadium for the New York Mets to be built in Willetts Point, Queens. The ballpark is anticipated to be completed by 2009. Originally thought to be used when and if the 2012 Olympics were going to be in New York (they have since been awarded to London), cost of the new stadium is an estimated $600 million.
