Safeco Field

Safeco Field in Seattle is home to the Seattle Mariners of Pro Baseball's American League. Sometimes referred to as "The Safe" by fans, the first baseball game at Safeco Field was on July 15, 1999, when the Seattle Mariners hosted the San Diego Padres. The $517.6-million ballpark was financed in a variety of ways. A one-half percent prepared food tax and rental-car tax covered most of the cost of construction. It took just over two years for the stadium to be completed. Seattle-based insurance and investments company Safeco Corporation purchased naming rights for $40 million in 1998.

Safeco Field features some special characteristics. The retractable roof does not fully cover the stadium as other roofs do, such as at Bank One Ballpark; rather, it acts more like an umbrella. Also unlike some other ballparks, the roof can be closed during the game instead of remaining open or closed as decided prior to game time. The roof is designed to withstand winds up to 70 miles per hour and six to seven feet of snow. On the field, a custom-designed, state-of-the-art drainage system and a grass blend of four kinds of Kentucky bluegrass and two kinds of perennial ryegrass give Safeco Field an optimal playing surface. Two first-of-the-kind play-by-play boards, one along the first base line and another on the third base line, show a running summary of the game to help fans follow the action by displaying at-bat information and additional in-game progress.

There is more than just baseball at Safeco Field. Behind left field is the Bullpen Market. The Bullpen Market has interactive games and activities, including the Fan Walk with personalized bricks, food vendors, an open pit barbeque, and quite possibly one of the best views of the game. The Children's Hospital Playfield on the Main Concourse features baseball-themed playground equipment. Located at the end of the left field line on the Upper Deck, Lookout Landing has incredible views inside and outside of the ballpark. Outside Corner Picnic Patio is another place that offers a great view, this time of Puget Sound. Directly above the Home Plate Gate entrance, Outside Corner Picnic Patio has tables and benches for lunches.

For baseball games, Safeco has a capacity of 46,621 people. Included in the total are 4,254 suite level seats and 452 disables seats, complete with accompanying companion seats. Safeco Field hosted the 2001 Pro Baseball All-Star Game. While 46,621 people may be a capacity crowd for baseball, various non-baseball events have taken place at Safeco Field. Safeco Field has also hosted the 2001 and 2002 Seattle Bowl, the college football game played between a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Pacific Ten Conference. Also, in 2003, WrestleMania XIX took place at Safeco Field.
