AT&T Park

AT&T Park in San Francisco is home to the San Francisco Giants of Pro Baseball. AT&T Park is the first privately financed ballpark in Pro Baseball since Dodger Stadium was built in 1962. Construction cost of the ballpark was $357 million and financing came from a variety of sources including a loan from Chase Manhattan Bank and the sale of charter seat licenses. Coincidentally, the first Pro Baseball game at AT&T Park was on April 11, 2000, when the San Francisco Giants hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers.

There are many unique features in AT&T Park. Booming home runs end up in McCovey Cove, which is located behind the right-field wall. Boats often begin to fill the cove hours before game time as the video replay boards from within AT&T Park can easily be seen from the water.

The first row of seats behind home plate is only 48 feet behind the batter, a full 12 feet closer to the batter then the pitcher is. Seating capacity of AT&T Park is 41,503 people, not including the possible 1,500-person standing room capacity.

Since the ballpark first opened in 2000, it has seen two name changes. The first naming rights were purchased when the ballpark first opened by Pacific Bell at a rate of $50 million over 24 years. SBC Communications, the parent company of Pacific Bell, dropped the Pacific Bell tag in 2004 and changed the name. In 2006, the name changed again, this time from SBC Park to AT&T Park following the SBC Communications/AT&T Corp. merger from 2005.

Many historical events have happened at AT&T Park, most in part thanks to San Francisco Giants outfielder Barry Bonds. Bonds hit his 500th career home run on April 17, 2001; his 600th home run on August 2, 2002; and his 700th on September 17, 2004, all of which occurred at AT&T Park. While the San Francisco Giants lost the 2002 World Series to the Los Angeles Angles of Anaheim, AT&T Park hosted some of the games of that series. AT&T Park is also scheduled to host the 2007 Pro Baseball All-Star Game.

Dozens of San Francisco Giants games at AT&T Park are special event games, such as Olympic Night and College Nights. Events are updated regularly. AT&T Park hosts more than baseball games throughout the year. THQ Supercross took place on January 28, 2006, and the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team took on Japan on February 10, 2006. The Emerald Bowl of college football has been hosted yearly at AT&T Park since 2002.
