Rogers Centre

Originally known as SkyDome, the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, is home to the Toronto Blue Jays of Pro Baseball. The multi-purpose arena is also utilized by the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. It took just over three years to complete the construction of Rogers Centre, from April 1986 until May 1989. Approximate cost of the construction of the stadium was $500 million. Rogers Communication purchased SkyDome from Sportco International in 2004, thus eventually leading to a name change.

The Rogers Centre has many unique features. It is the tallest and most massive of any ballpark in Pro Baseball. The decision to play the game with the roof open or closed is decided prior to the starting time. Rogers Centre was the first major sports team arena in North America to feature a fully retractable roof. It takes a mere 20 minutes to open or close the roof, and the 310-foot dome is the largest in all of Pro Baseball. The 33-by-115 foot JumboTron screen is one of the largest in the world. There are no bleacher seats. Included in Rogers Centre are the Curzons Fitness Club, a Rogers Centre Theatre, a Hard Rock Cafe, and the Renaissance Hotel, as well as various other restaurants and bars. The Toronto Blue Jays organizational offices are also located within the complex.

The 1992 World Series was the first World Series to be held outside of the United States. When the Toronto Blue Jays won that World Series, they also became the first Canadian team to win a World Series. Although the 1992 World Series was not clinched at Rogers Centre, the 1993 World Series was clinched at Rogers Centre when the Toronto Blue Jays won game six in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run walk-off home run by slugger Joe Carter off reliever Mitch Williams. It was the second time a World Series ended with a home run but the first time that a World Series was clinched in Canada.

Well over 2,000 events and more than 50 million guests have passed through the Rogers Centre. At full capacity, the Rogers Centre can seat as many as 65,673 people, but only seats 51,517 for baseball games on five different seating levels. The 1991 Pro Baseball All-Star Game was held at Rogers Centre. The Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela are just two of many public speakers who have spoken at Rogers Centre. Various concerts including Garth Brooks, the Rolling Stones, and U2 have been performed at Rogers Centre. The Canadian International Auto Show in February and Import Fest in October are two events held annually in Rogers Centre.
