Oakland Athletics | McAfee Coliseum Tickets |

McAfee Coliseum in Oakland is home to not only the Oakland Athletics of Pro Baseball, but also to the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League (NFL). The Oakland Athletics first played in McAfee Coliseum in 1968, when the Kansas City Athletics moved to Oakland to become the Oakland Athletics. The first baseball game at Oakland Coliseum was on April 17, 1968, when the Oakland Athletics played the Baltimore Orioles.
Construction of McAfee Coliseum began in 1966 at a cost of $25.5 million. The ballpark takes up 120 acres and is considered to be a multi-use facility due in part to hosting the home games of both the Oakland Athletics and the Oakland Raiders.
The ballpark underwent a renovation in November 1995 that lasted through the following baseball season. Included in the renovation was the removal of the outfield bleachers but the addition of two 40,000-square-foot clubs, 22,000 seats, 125 luxury suites, two new color video boards and a two-matrix scoreboard. Seating was then at a 48,219-person capacity. However, the third deck of McAfee Coliseum was closed on December 21, 2005, to shrink seating capacity to 34,179 people.
While still generally called "The Coliseum," McAfee Coliseum went through a few name changes and disputes before finally settling on McAfee. In 2003, Network Associates renewed their contract for an additional five years at $6 million. When the company was renamed McAfee in 2004, the name was changed to McAfee Coliseum and has been since.
Some of the biggest names in baseball have made their mark as Oakland Athletics players. Jim "Catfish" Hunter pitched the first-ever perfect game while pitching at McAfee Coliseum and Rollie Fingers and Reggie Jackson were his teammate in the early 70s. In 1991, Ricky Henderson broke Lou Brock's stolen base record.
In August 2005, it was proposed that a new ballpark be built in Oakland. Set to be located on 66th Avenue across from the current Coliseum. Should the new stadium be built, it's expected to hold only hold 35,000 fans and be the second-smallest in all of the major leagues.
Getting there and getting around
McAfee Coliseum is located at 7000 Coliseum Way in Oakland, California. One of the best ways to get there is to take Interstate 880 into Oakland. When coming from Marin County, Sacramento and San Francisco, take Interstate 580, follow to Interstate 980 toward downtown Oakland where I-980 becomes I-880. Once on I-880, take the 66th Avenue Exit and follow the signs to McAfee Coliseum. As far as public transportation, the Bay Area Transit system (BART) offers service directly from the BART Station/Coliseum ramp to the Coliseum Complex. There is plenty of parking available in various parking lots around the ballpark. With the exception of the Bleachers, all available wheelchair spaces (located throughout McAfee Coliseum) are reserved. Field level through the Upper Reserved sections all has adjacent companion seats. Entrances, elevators, and restrooms are all wheelchair accessible.
