Traditional Irish dance was heavily influenced by the constant shifting of populations throughout Great Britain. With each incoming group of people, through either migration or invasion, variations of the dance evolved. Michael Flatley came up with the idea of bringing traditional Irish dance to the entire world in 1994.
With its first performance in 1996, Lord of the Dance then known as Riverdance, was unleashed upon the world. Bringing together traditional Irish instruments, such as the fiddle, bagpipes and harp, and traditional formations, such as the commonly seen line dance, Lord of the Dance wowed people in the United States, UK and Australia.
Soon to follow would be a platinum-selling video of one of the troupe's performances. Flatley led the dance company on tour for two years, before retiring from performing only to become the groups Creative Director. Now with a Europe/World Tour, a U.S. Tour, a Las Vegas tour, and a tour through Asia and Africa, people all over the world have experienced traditional Irish dance through Flatley's Lord of the Dance.
