Located 20 mile north of San Diego, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is "Where the Turf Meets the Surf". Built by legendary actor Bing Crosby and several of his business partners, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club officially opened its gates in 1937. The legendary history of the club began in just its first year when the track hosted the winner take all race between Seabiscuit and Ligaroti for a $25,000 purse. Seabiscuit won the race by a nose, but the popularity of the club was about to skyrocket. The next several years saw the club turn into a who's who of the Hollywood social scene during the summers as racing almost took a back seat to the celebrities in the stands. Even to this very day the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is the place to be seen when it opens the gates to another season of summer racing in mid July. The track itself boasts a one mile main dirt track and a seven furlongs turf track. January of 2007 marked the installation of the club's new Polytrack surface.
