World Golf Championships

The World Cup of Golf is part of the World Golf Championships circuit that also features the Accenture Match Play Championship, NEC Invitational and the American Express Championship. The tournament rotates among six continents, and this year the World Cup of Golf will be held at the Real Club de Golf de Seville in Seville, Spain.

The World Cup takes players from the U.S. PGA Tour, PGA European Tour, PGA Japanese Tour, PGA Australian Tour, PGA South African Tour and the PGA Asian Tour. The 2004 World Cup will feature seven players from the European Ryder Cup team that routed the Americans in September.

The World Cup's tournament format is unique; its four rounds are split between two rounds of foursomes and two rounds of four-balls, as each country's best players partner up with each other for the second half of the tournament. In 2003 at South Carolina's Kiawah Island, South Africa's Trevor Immelman and Rory Sabbatini took home $700,000 for winning the World Cup.

Fred Couple and Davis Love III dominated the World Cup in the mid-1990s, winning four straight from 1992-1995. Since then, the World has been more widely represented among the champions, with winners from South Africa, Ireland, England and Japan joining the United States. Tiger Woods is a two-time winner of this event - in 1999, he won with Mark O'Meara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and in 2000, Woods and David Duval won the championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
