In 1973, Van Halen was born, and one of the greatest Rock and Roll bands ever came to life. The core of Van Halen has consisted of the following since the early 1970's: Michael Anthony (bass, backup vocals), Alex Van Halen (drums and percussion, backup vocals) and Edward Van Halen (guitar, piano and keyboard, backup vocals). Since the band's inception, Van Halen has had three different lead singers, each with their very own style and sound. David Lee Roth (1974-1985) was the heart and soul of Van Halen in the band's early years. With his excentric style and love for a good party, "Diamond Dave" brought an excitement to stage that had not been seen before. Many cite this extreme lifestyle of Roth to the band (namely Eddie) deciding that he had to leave.

Roth would be replaced by Sammy Hagar. Hagar (1985-1996, 2004-) brought a style to Van Halen that many die-hard fans considered soft. "Van-Hagar" as the band was referred to, did not see as much commercial success as the Roth led band, but nonetheless produced many great songs. Hagar would be "let-go" from the band after one too many disagreements with the Van Halen brothers, and would be replaced by Gary Cherone. Cherone (1996-1999) was the lead singer that many fan's weren't really sure what to make of, and most fans were glad to see him go and be replaced with Hagar. Before being known as Van Halen, the band was billed as The Trojan Rubber Company, The Broken Combs, Mammoth and Rat Salad before finally settling on Van Halen. To list every one of Van Halen's classic songs would be impossible. Some of the greatest include: "Eruption," "Ain't Talkin Bout Love," "Hot For Teacher," "Dance the Night Away," "Unchained," "Panama," "Jump," "Dreams," "Right Now," "Can't Stop Lovin' You," "Humans Being" and "Me Wise Magic."

Van Halen has also covered many classic songs, making them all their own, including: Ray Davies' "You Really Got Me," Marvin Gaye's "Dancing in the Street," and Roy Orbison's "(Oh) Pretty Woman." Albums put out by the band are some of the best in Rock history, and include: Van Halen (1978), Van Halen II (1979), Women and Children First (1980), Fair Warning (1981), Diver Down (1982), 1984 (1984), 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), Live: Right Here, Right Now (1993), Balance (1995), Best of Volume I (1996), Van Halen III (1998) and The Best of Both Worlds (2004, a greatest hits album). To date, Van Halen has earned just one Grammy Award, for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocals in 1991 for I. However, they have earned their spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock List.
