His father was a grocer. His mother was a seamstress. But he would eventually be called the "best singer in the business" by Frank Sinatra, and named by the United Nations as their "Citizen of the World." Born, Anthony Dominick Benedetto, Tony Bennet has become one of the most well-known singers, and one of the last great crooners, of all time. Bennett's big break came in 1949 when Bob Hope noticed him working in Greenwich Village in New York City. Hope liked Bennett's voice so much, he met him in his dressing room after the show and said, "Come on kid, you're going to come to the Paramount and sing with me." Some of his best-known songs include: "Because of You," "The Best Is Yet to Come," "I Left My Heart In San Francisco " "Rags to Riches," "Steppin' Out with My Baby," "Stranger in Paradise," and "What Is This Thing Called Love." With over 50 million records sold world-wide and platinum and gold albums to his credit, Bennett has won 10 Grammy Awards including the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1994, he released an "Unplugged" album recorded live for MTV, that album won Bennett Album of the Year. As one of the last great crooners from the "old-school" Bennett continues to amaze crowds at his live shows every time he puts on a concert. In Q magazines 2002 list of the "50 Bands To See Before You Die," Bennett made the list. He was also awarded the lifetime achievement award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Keeping with the arts as a hobby, he is also a serious and accomplished painter.
