The Strokes

The Strokes are an American rock and roll band who formed in New York City and gained fame for their live shows. Along with other New York City-based rock bands, the Strokes helped to launch a revival of a post-punk, "stripped-down" and raw sound genre. Their success at the early part of the 21st century helped to revive garage rock. Initially gaining notice with three-song The Modern Age EP, the Strokes soon landed a U.S. deal with RCA. The Strokes lived up to their high expectations when they delivered their debut full-length, Is This It, in the U.K. in 2001. While the band scored a top 10 modern rock hit with "Last Nite," and was named band of the year in 2002 by Spin, Is This It was only a minor hit on a commercial level. The album was certified gold for sales of 500,000. Still, the Strokes undoubtedly helped open up the door at commercial radio for the garage rock sound favored by such acts as the White Stripes and the Hives. "Sessions" on their second album began with producer Nigel Godrich, known or his work with Radiohead and Beck, but the teaming didn't pan out. Instead, the Strokes reunited Gordon Raphael, who produced their debut album, on Room On Fire, which was released in the fall of 2003.
