Rock 'n' roll is the culmination of all forms of American music. Rock features the beats and the straightforwardness of the blues, the room for improvisation and creativity from jazz, the hooks and choruses of folk and country music and the bombast of classical music. Rock can mean all things to all people, and as a result, it has become the soundtrack for American life. Ever since Ike Turner stepped into Sam Phillips' legendary Sun Studios in 1951 to record "Rocket 88," Rock 'n' Roll has been a thrill for some, a threat to others, and a soundtrack for America all the while.

Since the birth of rock 'n' roll, it can be argued that nothing has defined a decade more than the music it has produced. In the 1950s, it wasn't just about Elvis. In fact, if it weren't for artists such as the duckwalking Chuck Berry and the flamboyant Little Richard, the world may not have been ready for Elvis. When Bill Haley and the Comets released "Rock Around the Clock," the result was the widening of a generation gap.

Elvis made rock 'n' roll sexy, scary and safe at the same time, and he helped white people to identify with a predominantly black genre. The joining of the races made Elvis the definitive rock artist even decades after his death. Everything Elvis touched turn to gold - he had 40 No. 1 hits over the course of his career, and you can't count out a revival that may make him top the charts again.

Presley set off a chain reaction that still hasn't stopped. Elvis helped to spread rock to England and helping to bring in the British Invasion in the early 1960s. The Beatles dabbled in every music form, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath helped to define the bounds of heavy metal, the Who helped breed the first punk generation, Bob Dylan turned rock 'n' roll into more than love songs and sock hops, giving protesters and the aimless a voice.

The chain of events continues this very day. From new-wave to pop-punk to emo to grunge to garage rock, rock music keeps re-inventing itself, and as a result, giving each generation its own unique sound while paying homage to what came before it.
