Pageant Of Masters

The Pageant of Masters began in Laguna Beach, California in 1932 and it continues to be a great success today. The festival includes Living Picture shows which were first introduced by Lolita Perine in 1932 and were improved by artist Roy Ropp and renamed .The Spirit of the Masters. as it is known today. In these shows, artists construct .paintings. using local residents and a makeshift frame. The success of the festival brought in many artists from around the world and continues to be an attraction today. In 2000, there was an attempt to move the location of the festival, but the residents of Laguna Beach refused to give up their 70 year old tradition.

The festival takes place at the Laguna Beach community park. The park was built in 1941, in order for the festival to have a permanent home in the community; the community park is also host to many other cultural events throughout the year. The festival was also expanded to six weeks as opposed to its beginning one week due to its popularity. With this popularity the Pageant of the Masters has donated millions of dollars of scholarships that have been awarded to art students; it has also given numerous grants to cultural organizations.
