Under the name Sombrero Verde, the group developed their sound on the streets of Guadalajara with Fher Olvera on vocals and brothers Juan and Ulises Calleros on bass and guitar. As ambitious teenagers, they sought to bring the popular music of such icons as The Beetles and The Police to their native city, in their own way and language. 1986 marked their reinvention where the group deemed themselves Mana , meaning "positive energy" in Polynesian. During this time, Alex Gonzalez (drummer) was inducted into the group, completing their quintet. With their feet firmly on the ground, Mana signed a record deal with Poligram and released their self-titled debut album.

Mana's debut came at an opportune time as they were a part of a musical movement called "Rock en Tu Idioma" (Rock in Your Language) which supported Spanish written music. In a scene typically dominated by English music, Mana broke out and rose above the ranks. Their self-produced sophomore album Falta Amor did not receive any attention until a year after its release in 1990. The single "Rayando el Sol" opened doors that have yet to be shut.

This group has been subject to many changes throughout the years. In 1992, Ulises Calleros left the band allowing for the addition of keyboard player Ivan Conzalex and guitarist Cesear "Vampiro" Lopez. The release of Donde Jugaran los Ninos marked ultimate success for the group, enough so that Mana was able to hold together after Ivan Gonzales and Cesar Lopez decided to leave the band. Guitarist Sergio Vallin was added for the production of their Grammy Nominated album, Cuando Los Angeles Lloran. Mana went on to win a Grammy Award for their ecologically friendly, Suenos Liquidos. Their sound reached international recognition soon after collaborating with Carlos Santanta on "Corazon Espinado," featured in Santana's Supernatural. Mana was shortly asked to release a record and DVD for MTV Unplugged which received two Grammy Awards. Their sound continued to evolve and increase in popularity as evident by Revolucion de Amor and Mana Esenciales.
