Los Tigres del Norte
The Los Tigres del Norte band is one of Mexico's leading bands. The band plays in a popular style of music that is played in Mexico and the Southwestern United States called Bandera music ( the band is known for it's bandera style and is categorized as a bandera group). Los Tigres del Norte story began in Mexico in 1968, when their father, D. Eduardo Hernandez, a rancher, suffered an accident that left him handicapped and unable to work. Jorge, then only 14 years old, as the eldest of the Hernandez brothers, decided that they could dedicate themselves to music to help the family economically. One day, after performing in the border city of Mexicali, they were booked to participate in an Independence Day parade in San Jose, California.
The group had not yet been named; and then, an immigration official called them ' Little Tigers', and since they were traveling north, he added an additional expression, calling them ' Los Tigres del Norte.' Thus, Los Tigres Del Norte became the groups name. The band is currently based in San Jose, 'Los Tigres' chronicles the Latino immigrant experience that defines California. The band's original founding members are the three Hernᮤez brothers, Jorge (vocals, accordion, guitar), Eduardo (vocals, accordion, guitar) and Hernᮠ(vocals, bass), and their cousin, Oscar Lara (drums). The other brother Raul (vocals, bass) was also part of the original group. They are all still with the group except Raul, who went on to pursue a solo career in the mid-90s and have include two more members Lupe Olivo (saxophone) and another Hern ndez brother, Luis (vocals, guitar). The now five member Los Tigres del Norte have since the late 1960s, been bringing their distinctive norteusic to audiences and continue to set the standards by which other norteands must aspire.
The Los Tigres Del Norte are something like the Beatles of Mexican music. They have millions of followers and fans, their live performances into marathon affairs, where requests are welcome and the band does not stop playing until all of them have been honored. Many of their songs are tinged with a wry humor as they sing about life for Mexican Americans in Texas. Since their beginning, Los Tigres del Norte Mexican-American 'Grammy' winning group has made 30 albums and 14 movies, and forged a new style from the accordion-driven music of Mexico. The band won a Grammy for Best Norteno Performance for Herencia de Familia at first annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2000. Long considered musical icons, the Los Tigres del Norte are a major influence and inspiration for countless of groups. For more than three decades they have filled dance halls, broken attendance records throughout the United States, Mexico and Latin America with its fascinating mixture of Norteounds, passionate 'corridos,' ranchera ballads, cumbias and polkas.
The have affectionately been nicknamed ' Los Idolos Del Pueblo", (The Peoples Idols) for their sincerity and humbleness. Many of the band's songs represent the life of the working class and the experiences of immigrants in the United States. Los Tigres del Norte, unlike other groups that attempt to emulate them, have never allowed themselves to be photographed with weapons, and don't use offensive language. When addressing drug themes, it is handled as a point of view; story telling and often as a social critic. y dozens of groups. The main characters of this song, Emilio Varela and Camelia La Tejana, have emerged as part of the vocabulary of Mexican culture. Among the Los Tigres del Norte many releases were 1994's Dos Plebes, 1996's Unidos Para Siempre, 1997's Asi Como Tu, and 1999's Herencia de Familia. In September 2002, Los Tigres del Norte toured for the first time in Spain. The tour proved to be an absolute success, sold out venues and the recognition of the Spanish public, as well as media and personalities of the intellectual and artistic world. The band continues to tour.
