The earliest days of Genesis began in the late 1960's when Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks formed the band and began work on their first album From Genesis to Revelation. Genesis's initial sound was highly influenced by the Bee Gees, and was considered very much "pop" in nature. Over the next several years Genesis would see a few new drummers and would become known for a sound that was "often dark and haunting", continually moving further away from their "pop" roots. It was during this time that Genesis formed what would become a signature sound and added new drummer, and future front man, Phil Collins to the mix.
The first album that Phil Collins appeared on debuted in 1971 with the release of Nursery Cryme. The album achieved success in the UK rock scene and contained what many critics claim to be one of Genesis's greatest accomplishments in the 23-minute "Supper's Ready" track. The first half of the 70's was filled with experimental albums, such as The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and Peter Gabriel's flamboyant and energetic stage presence. After the tour for "Lamb", Peter Gabriel announced his departure from Genesis and embarked on a solo career. Gabriel's departure soon led way for what would become known as the "Phil Collins Era" for Genesis.
Phil Collins was not immediately given the role of lead singer for the newly Peter Gabriel-less Genesis. Instead, Collins was put in charge of coaching the potential replacements. After some time of auditions, Collins was finally given the job and Genesis began work on what would become their most successful album to date, A Trick of the Tail. Even with the success of their first album sans Peter Gabriel, Genesis was concerned about loosing Gabriel's incredible stage presence for their live shows. Knowing that they would need to match or exceed Gabriel's energy, Genesis decided to take Phil Collins of off the drums for their live shows to allow him more freedom to concentrate on his vocals. Though Collins proved to be much different from Gabriel on stage, the change was a success and Phil Collins developed his own style when it came to leading the now incredibly popular Genesis.
For the next several years both Genesis and Phil Collins would grow enormously in popularity. Phil Collins began a solo career, but continued to record and perform with Genesis on a regular basis. The height of both Collins and Genesis's popularity came full circle in 1983 with the release of the band's album Invisible Touch and their #1 US hit single of the same name. In 1996 Phil Collins left Genesis after 25 years and just five years after the release of their latest hit album We Can't Dance.
Now, in 2007, Genesis is reunited and ready to bring their string of hits to stages all over the world. Genesis has stated that the set list will include songs dating back to the mid 70's and cover songs up to 1996. With over 150 million albums sold, countless awards, and legions of fans across the world, the 2007 Genesis reunion tour can not be missed. With 20 dates across the US, Tickets will go fast, and the experience will be unforgettable. Do not miss your chance to see Phil Collins and Genesis perform live in a city near you.
