Prior to his Dave Matthews Band days, David John Matthews was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was the third of four children. The whole family moved to Westchester County, New York when he was two, and moved again to Charlottesville, Virginia. As an adult, Dave worked as a bartender in Charlottesville in 1990 where he became friends with a lawyer that encouraged him to tkae his musical career further. He introduced Dave to Carter Beauford. Beauford listened to a demo of Dave's and agreed to play drums with him, and Dave asked another local musician, LeRoi Moore, to join the group. The trio began working on songs together during 1991.

Matthews envisioned his music having a very rich and full song, which was not something that was easily pulled off by three musicians. Moore asked a former student of his former bandmate to join. Stegan Lessard was 16 at the time he helped complete the first demo of the band. The band played at Matthew's bar and even practiced there several times. Their final piece of the puzzle was Boyd Tinsley, who does the violinist solos that have made Dave Matthews Band so recognizable. Their first three songs on their demo were "The Song That Jane Likes", "Recently" and "Tripping Billies".

Because their sound was so much different than what people were used to hearing in the area, word spread quickly of their unique sound. The only issue with the band at this point was that they didn't have a name. One theory about the formation of their name was when Moore was making a call to book a gig. He wasn't sure what to tell them to call them, so he said "Just write Dave Matthews". When they played the gig, the announcer added "band" after Dave Matthews and the name stuck.
