You can see plenty of stand-up comedy on television, but nothing beats seeing it in person. No censors, no commercials, no editing for time; just an unobstructed view and more laughs than you can stand.

Bob Hope popularized stand-up comedy with his tours with the USO, entertaining American troops all over the world. While Bob Hope and other comedians provided fun for the whole family, a new generation was ready to blow the doors off the Laugh Shacks.

Lenny Bruce opened America up to dark humor during the turmoil that happened during the late 1960s, and he in turn opened the doors for comedians to come, such as Robert Pryor, whose black comedy appealed to every audience, and George Carlin, whose "Seven Dirty Words" routine put him and others in the middle of plenty of censorship controversies.

Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and Whoopi Goldberg defined stand-up comedy in the 1980s with their "Comic Relief" series on HBO. Jay Leno, a lifelong stand-up comedian, replaced Johnny Carson at the Tonight Show, marking the apex of stand-up comedy in America.

While comedy clubs may not be as numerous as before, the comedy's still original, as many comics are including songs and physical aspects to create something entirely their own.
