Yo-Yo Ma is one of the best, and perhaps the best-known cellists in the world. Born in 1955, French-born Chinese-American Yo-Yo Ma got his start on the violin and viola before moving onto the cello at a young age.
At the age of eight, Yo-Yo Ma made an appearance on American television while performing in a concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein. Shortly after that, Yo-Yo Ma studied at the Juilliard School and went on to Harvard University. Even before Harvard, Yo-Yo Ma was already making a name for himself.
Yo-Yo Ma had performed in many of the world's major orchestras and recorded Johann Sebastian Bach's suites for unaccompanied cello, both of which were critically acclaimed. Yo-Yo Ma uses either a 1973 Montagnana cello or a Davidov Stradivarius, which was given to him upon the death of its previous owner, Jacqueline du Pre.
Yo-Yo Ma has played a number of music varieties, including American bluegrass, Chinese melodies, and Brazilian music. He has also made television appearances in Arthur, The West Wing, Sesame Street, and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.
So far, Yo-Yo Ma has won a Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance, Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with (and without) Orchestra, Best Classical Contemporary Composition, Best Classical Album, and Best Classical Crossover Album.
