Wu-Tang Clan first emerged in 1993. Out of Staten Island, the group originally consisted of nine MCs. The name Wu-Tang comes from a powerful mythical kung fu sword wielded by invincible warriors. Their main objective was to release one album and survive off of the subsequent spin offs. Included in the idea was allowing each of the members to become stars in their own right, while still having ties with the Wu-Tang Clan. Although it seemed to be an impossibility, the plan worked. Method Man was the first to go solo, in 1994, followed by Ol' Dirty Bastard in 1995, and Ghostface Killah in 1996. When all of the solo side projects were completed, Wu-Tang Clan regrouped in June 1997 with the double release "Wu-Tang Forever." While the album was largely anticipated by Wu-Tang Clan fans, the release entered the charts at No. 1. Guest associate to "Wu-Tang Forever" Cappadonna soon became the tenth Wu-Tang Clan member. One year later, Ol' Dirty Bastard began running into all sorts of legal problems that lasted well over 18 months and the second round of the solo releases by the members of the Wu-Tang Clan did not meet as much success. Included in late 1999 and early 2000 was an overabundance of Wu-Tang Clan exposure in terms of a clothing line, a comic book, a video game and more. A new release by Wu-Tang Clan in 2000, "The W," was met with less fanfare than many expected. The fourth Wu-Tang Clan album was released in December 2001, and the most recent release was 2004's live album "Disciples of the 36 Chambers." Wu-Tang Clan is on tour for the first time since the 2004 death of co-founding member Ol' Dirty Bastard.
