The White Stripes are a brother-sister duo from Detroit. Their blues-rock music features Meg White on drums and Jack White on guitar and piano. Both Meg and Jack White sing vocals, with Jack White responsible for the lead. Known for raw low fidelity sounds and simple arrangement and composition, the White Stripes began in 1997.
For several years in the beginning of their career, The White Stripes struggled while on tour with Sleater-Kinney and Pavement. While they were on tour The White Stripes released a handful of singles on various independent record labels such as Sympathy For The Recording Industry. Sympathy For The Recording Industry would release the first three albums by The White Stripes. The White Stripes released their self-titled debut album in 1999, and released De Stijl in 2000.
The De Stijl cover features the colors black, white, and red art, which is "the most powerful color combination of all time, from a Coca-Cola can to a Nazi banner." Red, white, and black are prominent colors used by The White Stripes in everything from their outfits to their albums covers to their videos.
The first significant release by The White Stripes came in 2001, when they released White Elephant. While The White Stripes first gained attention in the U.K. following that release, the United States soon followed that trend, anchored behind the single "Fell in Love with a Girl." The 2003 release Elephant hit in the Top 10 in the U.S. The single "Seven Nation Army" won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song, and Elephant won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album.
The fifth album by The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan was released in June 2005. Get Behind Me Satan won another Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2006.
