Born Carson Wayne Newton in 1942, Wayne Newton is the half-Indian son of an auto mechanic from Roanoke, Virginia. Wayne Newton learned the piano, the guitar, and the steel guitar by the age of 6. As a child he appeared on weekends with his older brother Jerry Newton as part of the Grand Ole Opry roadshows and performed for President Harry S. Truman.
Asthma forced the family to move to Phoenix where the brothers performed regularly on a local TV show. While still in high school a Las Vegas booking agent saw the show and the doors to Las Vegas opened. Originally signed for two weeks, the two brothers eventually performed for five years, doing six shows a night between 5 and 11. According to Wayne Newton, "I kept learning to play new instruments simply to give my voice some relief." Wayne Newton now plays 13 instruments, many of which are worked into his shows.
In 1962, when Wayne Newton and his brother performed on The Jackie Gleason Show, they received national recognition and were asked to return 12 times. Wayne Newton and his brother had a falling out in 1969 that would distance them for three decades. Entertainment icons such as Lucille Ball, Bobby Darin, Danny Thomas, George Burns, and Jack Benny recognized his talent and helped perpetuate Wayne Newton's career. Bobby Darin brought him his first record hits, "Heart," "Danke Schoen," "Red Roses For A Blue Lady," and "Summer Wind." The single "Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast" scored Wayne Newton a national No. 1 hit. But Las Vegas remained his stage.
Wayne Newton turned down $10,000 a week working in the lounges to work as an opening act for Jack Benny, earning $1,500 a week during the next three years. After his job with Jack Benny ended, Wayne Newton was offered a job to open for another comic at the Flamingo Hotel. Wayne Newton asked for a headline act instead. It was extremely unusual for a lounge act to become a headliner but Wayne Newton broke that barrier. However, his chance as a headliner came during the slow season in Las Vegas. The locals came out in droves and saved Wayne Newton's career. Wayne Newton then went on to break attendance records. In 1994, Wayne Newton performed his 25,000th solo show in Las Vegas over a period of over 40 years, earning him the nickname Mr. Las Vegas.
To date Wayne Newton has recorded and released 158 albums. Wayne Newton has appeared in more than 20 different movies and TV shows acting in a variety of roles, including playing himself. In January 2005, Wayne debuted his own reality show on E! Television Network, The Entertainer Starring Wayne Newton.
