Umphrey's McGee was formed in 1997 when guitarist/vocalist Brendan Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik, keyboardist Joel Cummins, and drummer Mike Mirro found each other at the University of Notre Dame while they were performing in other bands.

After only eight months together, Umphrey's McGee released their first album Greatest Hits Vol. III. Percussionist Andy Farag was added around this same time, and Umphrey's McGee began performing at Notre Dame parties. In 1999 Umphrey's McGee released Songs for Older Women, and released the live album One Fat Sucka in 2000. Guitarist Jake Cinninger was added later that year.

By 2002, Umphrey's McGee released their first proper album Local Band Does OK. They were invited to perform at the Bonnaroo Festival in 2002, and Mike Mirro left the band to be replaced with Kris Myers. The next few years saw Umphrey's McGee on the road and their two releases, Local Band Does OK and Anchor Drops were both finally available in music stores across the country.

Umphrey's McGee again played in Bonnaroo in 2004 in front of over 20,000 people. They released Safety in Numbers in 2006 and also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
