Grammy Award winner Train hails from San Francisco. What began as two members in Rob Hotchkiss and Patrick Monahan would soon grow to five members with the addition of Jimmy Stafford, Charlie Colin, and Scott Underwood. By 1997, Train was already on tour opening for Counting Crows and the Barenaked Ladies. The first major hit from Train was the single "Meet Virginia" off of their self-titled 1998 debut. From their follow-up album My Private Nation, the single "Drops of Jupiter" spent a total of 53 weeks on the hot 100 and earned Train a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song and Best Arrangement. "Calling All Angels" was the lead single off of their third release, My Private Nation. Train also recorded the single "Ordinary" for the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack, which attracted a younger audience due to the heavier-than-usual Train sound.
In 2005, the Train single "Get to Me" was used for Cingular commercials and as a result hit No. 9 on the Billboard charts. Train began recording their fourth album in the summer of 2005. For Me, It's You was released in early 2006, featuring new members Johnny Colt and Brandon Bush.
