Tony Bennett was born as Anthony Dominick Benedetto on August 13, 1926. His music career began in the '50s and is going strong today. When he was only 10, Tony Bennett began singing at the Triborough Bridge. By the age of 16, he had dropped out of school and was determined to launch his singing career.

Tony Bennett was then drafted into the United States Army in 1944. He was discharged two years later and entered the American Theater Wing, which is a New York City-based organization for theater education. By 1950, Tony Bennett had signed his first demo with Columbia Records. "Because of You" hit No. 1 on the charts and lasted 10 weeks on its way to selling one million copies. Tony Bennett then saw his next two singles, "Cold, Cold Heart" and "Rags to Riches," also hit No. 1. His first album release came in 1952 with Because of You.

By the '60s, Tony Bennett had released a number of albums and was continuing with new releases at a rate two or three a year. Once the Beatles and the British invasion hit the States, Tony Bennett saw a few of his singles become moderate successes, but he was definitely beginning to decline in popularity.

Tony Bennett would then start his own record company in 1971. Improv was out of business by 1977. By the end of the '70s Tony Bennett was out of a record contract with no manager and no performances other than in Las Vegas. Also in the late '70s, Tony Bennett would call on his sons Danny, who was an aspiring musician, and Dae Bennett for help. Together the three figured out a way to get Tony Bennett back on track. He moved back to New York City, starting performing in colleges and small theaters, and by 1986 he was back with Columbia Records.

In the '80s, Tony Bennett remained unchanged. His attire, singing style, musical accompaniment, and song choice all remained the same. He still continued recording well into the '90s. Tony Bennett would win two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance. He also made an appearance on MTV Unplugged in 1994 alongside Elvis Costello and k. d. lang. The album of that event would go platinum, and again won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, as well as Album of the Year.

Tony Bennett continues to record and tour today. In addition to the continuously growing number of releases to his name, Tony Bennett has also taken up painting. Through serious training, work, and museum visits, Tony Bennett has managed to refine his skill and works on it every day.

His list of accolades includes numerous Grammy Awards, a 1997 induction into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) in 2002, and a 2005 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honor for his contribution to American culture through performing arts.
