Born in Florida in 1950, and struggling with his early bands, The Sundowners, The Epics, and the Mudcrutch, Tom Petty got his big break in 1976, with the formation of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and the release of their self-titled debut album. For the last 30 years, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have released 19 albums, an average of about one every other year.
While Tom Petty has been nominated for 16 Grammy Awards, he has only taken home three: Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal for Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 in 1989, and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for "You Don't Know How It Feels" and Best Engineered Album for Wildflowers, both in 1994.
Tom Petty has been rewarded several times for his career achievements in the music industry. After releasing a live album in 1985, music legend Bob Dylan invited Petty and the Heartbreakers on his world Tour. From 1986-1987 the two embarked on the True Confessions tour through the United States, Australia, Japan and Europe. In 1994, he was presented with MTV's Video Vanguard Award for his contributions to music videos (he won Best Male Video in 1994 for "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and in 1995 for "You Don't Know How It Feels"). In 1996, he was awarded the Golden Note Award from the ASCAP, and UCLA's George and Iran Gershwin Award For Lifetime Musical Achievement.
In 1999, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Three years later, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Tom Petty himself was featured on an episode of The Simpsons. In 2005, Tom Petty began hosting his own show on XM Radio called "Buried Treasure," where he digs into the vault to play classics from his personal record collection; Tom Petty also received the Billboard Century Award for his lifetime achievements. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are on tour in 2006 in support of the recent solo release by Petty, Highway Companion. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers continue to perform in front of record crowds every time they take the stage.
