Tom Jones, born as Thomas Jones Woodward in Pontypridd in Wales, first rose to fame in the mid-‘60s. He began his career while singing as Tommy Scott with the Senators. When Tom Jones recorded a handful of solo songs in 1964, he found little success while with producer Joe Meek. The following year, Decca producer Peter Sullivan discovered Tommy Scott while he was playing in a club one night, and directed him to manager Phil Solomon. That did not work out either, and he soon moved back to Wales.
He continued to sing at clubs, and finally caught the attention of artist manager Gordon Mills, who soon signed Tommy Scott and renamed him Tom Jones. The first single recorded by Tom Jones for Decca, "Chills and Fever" was not as successful as the second single, "It's Not Unusual." "It's Not Unusual" was a No. 1 hit in the UK and a Top 10 hit in the United States. The press Tom Jones received as a result of that single catapulted his other singles and himself into the spotlight.
While he was popular during 1965, including winning a Grammy Award for Best New Artist, Tom Jones began to suffer from a decline in popularity in '66. As a result, Tom Jones settled for a more respectable image, and began recording music that appealed to a much broader audience. "Green, Green Grass of Home" and "Detroit City" were two singles that returned Tom Jones to the top of the charts in the UK and hit the Top 40 in the U.S. For the rest of the ‘60s, Tom Jones enjoyed success in both Britain and America, but ended up relocating to the United States at the end of the decade. He then began hosting his own variety television show, This is Tom Jones from 1969-71.
Following the show, Tom Jones moved to Las Vegas and began to focus on his club performances. When Tom Jones' son, Mark Woodward, became his manager following the death of former manager Gordon Mills, Tom Jones got back into recording. This time, he chose to concentrate on the country market, and released a series of country-pop albums in the early ‘80s.
In 1988, Tom Jones performed with Prince and their single "Kiss" became a Top 40 hit in America and a Top 10 hit in the UK. Tom Jones began touring again, and would release a dance-pop album in 1994. Following several movie appearances and various awards, including the Brit of the Year Award, and the Amigo Award for Best International Male in 2000, Tom Jones released That's Mr. Jones, a collaboration with Wyclef Jean, in 2002. Later that same year, Tom Jones released Greatest Hits. Another album release in 2004 Tom Jones and Jools Holland, and a 65th birthday in 2005 leads up to 2006, when Tom Jones was knighted by her Majesty the Queen to become Sir Tom Jones. Sir Tom Jones still tours today.
