The Strokes singer Julian Casablancas is responsible for the formation of his band. Bassist Nikolai Fraiture and he have been friends since childhood. Guitarist Nick Valensi and drummer Fabrizio Moretti began playing together while the two attended Dwight School in Manhattan and were soon joined by Julian Casablancas. Sooner or later, the three of them met up with Nikolai Fraiture and The Strokes became an official band in 1999.

The Strokes grew in popularity on the Lower East Side of New York, especially at Mercury Lounge. Ryan Gentles soon quit his job as the entertainment booker and became The Strokes manager. Soon enough, The Strokes had a play list of 10 to 12 songs. Small-time rock producer for the underground New York rock scene Gordon Raphael was in attendance for an early concert by The Strokes and led them to the release of the first EP by The Strokes, The Modern Age. The Modern Age was released in 2001, and suddenly there was a bidding war between record labels as far as who would sign The Strokes.

Is This It was the October 2001 debut from The Strokes through RCA Records. Following the release of their debut, The Strokes went on a tour around the world including dates in Australia, Japan, and Europe. Two years later, The Strokes released Room on Fire, the follow-up to The Modern Age. Their third release, First Impressions of Earth was released in January 2006 to mixed reviews. It did, however, debut at No. 4 on the U.S. charts. Room on Fire also peaked at No. 4 on the charts.
