In an unusual cycle, The Producers started out as a movie in 1968, was made into a Broadway musical theatre production in 2001, and then remade as a movie musical in 2005. The Producers plot develops as theater producers Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom hatch a plan to raise money for a Broadway show, ensure the show flops, and keep the cash. The Producers makes fun of the world of theatre and launches a series of laughs that only writer Mel Brooks could have imagined.

The Producers opened in April 2001. The Producers earned the most Tony Awards in Broadway history and made all Producers sit up and take notice. The Producers took home 12 Tony Awards, including the 2001 Tony Award for Best Musical, and 12 Drama Desk Awards.

Hunter Foster plays Leo Bloom and John Treacy Egan plays Max Bialystock on Broadway. Egan can also be seen in the 2005 film version of The Producers with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. See the chorus line of little old ladies dance circles around The Producers at St. James Theatre, NY.

The Producers brought Mel Brooks' brand of silliness to Broadway and, just like in the play, theater ticket sales soared. Mel Brooks started out as a stand-up comic, then wrote Sid Caesar's television shows before creating the television show Get Smart with Buck Henry. His first film, The Critic, won an Oscar. In 1968, The Producers won Mel Brooks a second Academy Award. He went on to create a number of films usually writing, starring, producing, and directing them. Mel Brooks is one of a select group who have received an Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy award.
