Gospel and country band the Oak Ridge Boys started in 1945 as the Oak Ridge Quartet. Upon their popularity in the ‘50s, they changed their name to the Oak Ridge Boys and have been called that ever since.
While the line up has changed throughout the years, the most popular and recognizable line up includes Duane Allen, Joe Bonsall, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, the Oak Ridge Boys had a string releases on Skylite, and saw a number of line up changes over the years. In 1970, not long before they changed their sound to be more like country and pop music, the Oak Ridge Boys won their first Grammy Award for "Talk About the Good Times."
Even though they continued to release albums, the Oak Ridge Boys did not find success until 1981's Fancy Free, which hit No. 1 on the country charts and No. 5 on the pop charts. Bobbie Sure, released in 1982, was another cross over hit, reaching No. 1 on the country charts and No. 12 on the pop charts.
More line up changed and more releases later and the Oak Ridge Boys were as strong as ever. This time they experimented with a more gospel sound, and continued to releases albums. Their most recent release is scheduled for sometime in 2006, which is rumored to be one of their best ones yet.
