The Cars began as part of the American New Wave of music that emerged in the late ‘70s. Through a combination of the ‘70s-style guitar-oriented rock and the early-‘80s synthesizer pop, The Cars managed to make the most of their sound. The Cars dominated the charts for over nine years. The Cars, released in 1978, featured the song "Just What I Needed;" 1984's Heartbeat City boasted four Top 20 singles. Both albums are seen as the most successful releases by The Cars to date.

The 1987 release, Door to Door, was not nearly as successful as their previous albums, and The Cars announced their break up in 1988. In 2005, rumors began circulating about a possible reunion. Two of the original members of The Cars, Elliot Easton and Greg Hawkes, joined with Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton, and Prairie Prince to form The New Cars. A release of The New Cars: It's Alive, a greatest hits collection, was released in 2006. The New Cars followed that up by going on tour with Blondie.
