British rockers The Darkness manage to combine glam rock and classic hard rock. Considered to be highly retro in their music, The Darkness is apparently influenced by ‘70s rockers such as AC/DC, Queen, Cheap Trick, and more. Based out of Lowestoft in Suffolk, England, The Darkness first began in 2000.

Singer Justin Hawkins and his brother, guitarist Dan Hawkins, joined forces with the likes of bassist Frankie Poullain and drummer Ed Graham. In the beginning, The Darkness only played in small pubs. With their 2003 release Permission to Land and the single "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," The Darkness rose to fame in England. Permission to Land hit No. 1 on the U.K. charts and went on to sell1.5 million copies in the U.K.

The success of their first release garnered three Brit Awards in 2004. The Darkness won for Best Group, Best Rock Group, and Best Album. Later that year, The Darkness began to experience blacklash, with the public saying that novelty bands such as The Darkness had become rather common. In response, The Darkness upped the ante on their concerts, and a majority of their "Winter-National Tour" shows sold out.

One Way Ticket To Hell … And Back, the second album from The Darkness, was released in November 2005. The album failed to match the success of their debut, hitting as high as No. 11 on the U.K. charts. Although their album did not sell as well, The Darkness still continued to be a success on tour; their concerts received plenty of critical acclaim. Although many critics say that The Darkness is nothing more than a joke, The Darkness has continued to claim they take their music seriously.
