Tesla formed in Sacramento, California in 1984. Originally called City Kid, the band changed their name to Tesla during the recording of their debut album Mechanical Resonance, which came out in August 1986. Tesla's sound fit in well with the '80s glam band, but it also featured a more bluesy sound while their lyrics were about much more than girls, alcohol and violence. The band also strayed away from the crazy makeup and crazy get ups, preferring to play in jeans and t-shirts.

Tesla remade "Signs", which was originally recorded by Five Man Electrical Band, in 1990. The song is quite possibly the most mainstream of all Tesla's hits. Other Tesla hits include "Gettin' Better," "Modern Day Cowboy," "Little Suzi" (a cover of a 1981 PhD song), "Edison's Medicine" and "Love Song." They would release The Great Radio Controversy in 1989 and Psychotic Supper in 1994.

The band released Bust A Nut in 1994, and took a hiatus. Tesla would reform six years later, and record a live double album, RePlugged Live. Replugged Live was their fourth compilation/live release: Five Man Acoustical Jam was in 1990; Times Makin' Changes – the Best of Tesla came in 1995; and 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Tesla came out in 2001.

Telsa was part of the Rock Never Stops Tour in 2002 alongside other '80s rock bands; they released Into the Now in 2004; and spent the summer of 2006 on their 2006 Electric Summer Jam Tour. Tesla is expected to release a new album in 2006 or 2007.
