Teena Marie was born as Mary Christine Brockert on March 5, 1956. As a protege of Rick James, Teena Marie made a name for herself as one of the first Caucasian R&B performers.

Teena Marie signed with Motown Records in 1976 and quickly joined forces with Rick James for her debut album Wild and Peaceful. Rumor has it that Rick James refused to work with Diana Ross and settled on Teena Marie for her songs "I'm A Sucker For Your Love" and "Deja Vu (I've Been Here Before)."

Lady T and Irons in the Fire were two of Teena Marie's self-produced albums in 1980. Lady T went gold and Irons in the Fire featured her first single to hit the Top 40 ("I Need Your Lovin"). It Must Be Magic, released a year later, went platinum as her best-selling release on Motown.

Shortly following those albums, Teena Marie realized she was not paid her royalties and sued Motown. She then signed with Epic Records in 1983, and released two albums right away in Robbery and Starchild. Starchild featured a Top 10 hit and a Top 5 R&B single with "Lovergirl" and "Out On A Limb," respectively.

A variety of albums and experiments with sound and Teena Marie was back to her R&B calling in 1988. After getting dropped from Epic in 1990 she released Passion Play an in independent label in 1994.

Many of her songs have been sampled by other artists, but Teena Marie disappeared from the spotlight for 14 years. In 2004, she released La Dona though Cash Money Records, and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance for "Still in Love." Sapphire was released in 2006.
