System Of A Down Information

Formed in 1995 System of a Down is made up of Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan. The band's Armenian ancestry plays a prominent role in its subject matter. Several of their songs address issues such as war and genocide. Armed with social justice as their overriding theme, guitarist Daron Malakian has written the majority of the songs for the band for 10 straight years.

System of a Down has toured extensively with a number of prominent metal bands. But the band defies the media's need to categorize them. They released five albums with three albums debuting at No. 1. The band's main influence is mostly from early alternative rock bands, as well as from heavy metal, punk rock, jazz, fusion, Armenian folk music, classic rock, blues and industrial genres. Baritone electric guitars, electric mandolins, sitars, 12-string guitars, and Middle Eastern ouds are some of the instruments found on System of a Down albums.
